The motto on the original standard, and seen here on the ribbon, is "Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God." Major Jonathan Gostelowe listed 13 standards, or regimental flags, in an inventory he conducted in 1778 for the Continental Army. Design of these flags is attributed to John Henderson, and they flew with the 13 different regiments of Pennsylvania.
