In response, a small group of volunteers, under the leadership of Lady Muriel Anderson, wife of the Governor of Newfoundland, Sir David Murray Anderson, formed the Service League to help the people affected by the disaster. When the immediate need was over, the volunteers decided to form a permanent organization. This was launched in 1935, the Silver Jubilee of King George
